About This Station
The station is powered by a Davis Vantage Vue weather station. The data is collected every 2.5 seconds and the site is updated every 10 minutes. This site and its data are collected using WeatherLink Software v6.0.3. The station is comprised of an anemometer, a rain gauge and a thermo-hygro sensor (the humidity sensor is only active sporadically). The sensor station is pole-mounted on the end of a dock approximately 200' offshore of the south end of Crescent Lake. The sensor station is approximately 15' above water level.
This station participates in the Citizen Weather Observer Program (CWOP). Data from this station is uploaded to the CWOP website every 10 minutes.
About the Crescent City Area
This lovely small town, full of southern charm, sits amid a generous grove of live oak trees on a high wooded bluff on the western shore of Lake Crescent. This quaint town has attracted visitors since the late 1800s. The town was established in 1876, and incorporated in 1883. Crescent City was one of Florida's major citrus growing areas in the 1890s, with 42 citrus growers by 1895. In 1902, the area's primary cash crop changed to ferns. Crescent City has two listings on the National Register of Historic Places: Hubbard House and the Crescent City Historic District.
Lake Crescent (or Crescent Lake) was named for its crescent moon shape. It covers approximately 18,000 acres (about 28 square miles) and is the third largest lake in Florida behind Lake Okeechobee and Lake George. The lake is somewhat tidal from the St. Johns River. The lake is connected to the St. Johns River by Dunn's Creek, which starts on the extreme north end of Crescent Lake and winds its way about 6 miles north and west to the St. Johns River. Because Dunns Creek is narrow and sinewy, tidal fluctuations in the St. Johns River are significantly dampened, hence there is very little tidal effect seen in Crescent Lake. Crescent Lake receives the majority of its inflow from Haw Creek, which connects to Crescent Lake on its extreme southeast end.
Today the city displays the "Belle of Crescent City", a citrus packaging label, as its logo. There are a number of Victorian era homes in the historic district (tour brochure available), as well as gift and antique shops. Fine dining and accommodations can also be found in Crescent City's downtown area.
Eagle's Nest Grove in Crescent City is the oldest continuous organic citrus grove in Florida.
Be sure and visit the "LITTLE BLUE HOUSE HERITAGE MUSEUM AND ART CENTER", located next to the Crescent City Woman's Club, on Summit Street (US-17).
Crescent City is the home of the American College of Applied Science (ACAS)and its 20-acre (81,000 m2) Dream Pond Science Field Station and Reserve for animal science and behavior. ACAS was licensed by the Florida Department of Education, Commission for Independent Education in January 2005.
About 8 miles west of Crescent City is Welaka, a golf-cart-friendly community somewhat smaller than Crescent City. Welaka features a US Fish and Wildlife Service Fish Hatchery where several varieties of fish are spawned and raised to fingerling status, then released into Florida waters. Welaka also features a locally famous restaurant, "Shrimps R' Us and More". Be sure to have lunch or dinner there on your drive through Welaka.
